Nikko ~ Kinugawa

I swear I am trying to get better at this blogging thing! (It has been a few years but I still did not get around to post diligently )

My boyfriend and I spent a night and two days in Kinugawa back in February. Kinugawa is actually in Nikko. We already went to Nikko a few month ago but as it was kouyou season, it was packed with tourists and we did not get to see everything we wanted to see that time.

When we went in February, my boyfriend was quite sick, but even with breaks in between each places we saw most of what we wanted to see in two days

The place I wanted to see the most was the Kegon falls. You can take a bus to go there from Nikko Station (to Chuzenjiko). It takes about 50 minutes and the bus is 1150 yen.

The fall is quite close from the station. You have to take an elevator that will take you down to the observation deck. The fee is of 550 yen. It is reqlly beautiful and the observation deck has three levels.

A few minutes from the falls is the Chuzenji Lake. As we went during the winter, the water surface was frozen but it seems like you can ride pedal boats when the days get warmer.

Just at the intersection before the lake, there is a small café called House Toki, it has a very nice atmosphere and a nice view on the lake. As we wanted to grab (late) lunch, we stopped there and it a very nice place for chilling (moreover, probably because it was a Friday during winter, there was really not a lot of people).

We then went back to our hotel which was in Kosagoe, for people staying there, be aware that if you do not eat at the hotel, there is only one other option in the area which is a Gusto on the other side of the station! Also on the way, there is a group of scarecrows(?!) on the way which seems super creepy at night :D.

The next day, we first met to Ryuoukyo canyon. It it in a very countryside-ish part of the city, so there is about only one train per hour that goes there. The train to go there (after the line change) was so packed that we almost could not ride it. But almost nobody stopped there.
There are a few restaurants in front of the station and we decided to grab breakfast there. An older lady who was trying to get customers for her restaurants successfully sucked us in. We was very, very talkative and gave us some nice tips about the canyon.

It was honestly super beautiful, it had been a long time since I last saw such a breathtaking landscape. The snow makes it even nicer! Sadly, the photo does not do it justice.

Then, we went to the Kinu-Tateiwa Otsuribashi suspension bridge and walked a bit in that area. You can also go up Tateiwa, a 70 meters high rock (be prepared for stairs). In front of th Kinugawa Onsen station, there are a few restaurant, as place serving strawberry (a local speciality) soft cream. I recommend it!

Lastly, we went to Tobu World Square, an outdoor theme park where you can find reproductions world-famous buildings on the 1/25 scale . The park is way bigger than what I thought. Count at least 2 hours to visit it. It is really nicely done and has a light-up at night. There is also an illumination part to the theme park for a romantic stroll.

We were not aware of it but the last train going towards Tokyo at Tobu World Square Station is around 18:10 and it is a steam train. Compared to the normal train, there is an additional 400 yen or so fee to ride it. Most of the people riding it do it because they wanted to ride a steam train, but some people like us, just realize last minute that it was the last train (or so the staff said).
